Establishment of the First Turkish Printing House and İbrahim Müteferrika

The printing press enables us to share large amounts of information quickly and in large numbers. In fact, the printing press is so important that it has begun to be known as one of the most important inventions of our age. It has drastically changed the way society develops. The process in the development of the printing house in Turkey begins with İbrahim Müteferrika. İbrahim Müteferrika, a unitarian Hungarian born in 1674 in Cluj-Napoca, was brought to Istanbul as a prisoner by the Turks. Here he was also a Muslim as well. During his education in Hungary, he became interested in printing, that is, printing works and wanted to establish a printing house because he learned. Due to his knowledge of many foreign languages, he also participated in delegations communicating with other countries.

Regarding the establishment of the first printing house in the Ottoman period, Yirmisekiz Mehmed Çelebi, who was sent to France by Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha in 1720, took his son Mehmed Said Efendi with him. Said Efendi did not stop there and ensured that many innovations were carried to the Ottoman Empire. He also visited a printing house in Paris and when he returned to Istanbul, he decided to work on this issue. When he returned to Istanbul, he met Müteferrika and together with the support of Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha (the only condition; it was a must to print non-religious works), they started working to establish a printing business. Thus, it was started with the establishment of the first printing house named Darü't-Tıbâati'l Amire on December 16, 1727. Machine and Latin alphabet patterns were brought from abroad.
