FSC, (Forest Stewardship Council) first emerged, when an agreement was not reached to stop deforestation at the Earth Summit held in Rio in 1992. At that time it was not official yet. In 1993, the group gathered in Canada and started to work on improving and controlling forest practices in order to formalize the works. The goal was to create a voluntary, market-based approach. The goal has been achieved. Today secretariat of FSC is in Bonn; Germany and the center in Minnesota; USA.
Today FSC has become a worldwide, non-profit organization serving to promote forest management. The FSC system includes a certified chain of custody that tracks materials and products at every stage of the supply chain from the forest or reclamation point to the point where it ends and is labeled. This is tracked by the billing process, and the last label on the product has a code that verifies that the product is actually FSC.
PRINCIPLE OF FSC
The FSC prohibits deforestation, deforestation and illegal logging in certified areas.
FSC certification, greatly reduces the risk of encountering illegal lumber.
FSC provides a link between the forest and the end user.
FSC certification acts as a catalyst to improve standards in forest management.
What we can say about the net benefit of the FSC document to our world is that it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and supports sustainable forest management that protects wildlife habitat, with these principles.
